So, the job for today was to clean the church office upstairs because the Kansas City team of about 27 ppl are coming in on Saturday and their job will be to make this upstairs area into 3 seperate offices. They will also be painting the entire church (warehouse) inside and out. Many professional people are in this Kansas city group (painters, construction, etc.). I have no idea what all they will be doing, but i am excited to see. That place is SO dirty and dusty, this day is the dirtiest i have been since i´ve been here. I was covered in LAYERS of dirt/dust! That´s why i look gross in all these picutes. ;)

What a fun group. The guy in the red hat is Michi!!! He and his wife Sara just got back yesteday (they are the ones whose house i am living in). This guy is so full of love for everybody! I told him yesterday that i have 8 more days here, and he told his wife Sara yesterday, "Do you think 8 days will be enough to spend with Christie?" lol. He was serious too. Yesterday they bought my bus rides and dinner b/c Michi said, "You can pay another day, but for right now, i am so happy you are here and in my home!" Talk about feeling loved. They are such a blessing to me. I was going to try and stay somewhere else this wk (a fews days here and a few days there) b/c i didn´t want to be in their way, but they said well, you can visit other ppl, but you need to spend a lot of time with us. I am so happy they are back! Michi also works full time for Conexion.

This Johnny and he is Jherson´s cousin who also works for Conexion full time. I think he´s 20 years old. He does a lot of runs to the airport, taking and dropping off groups. He is a lot of fun. His girlfriend is Valerie from Maryland and she lives here now and also works for Conexion full time. Hopefully i will have some pictures of her soon too.

Eternity?

Do you realize that we will spend more time in eternity than we will here on earth?? I mean, we all know that, but do you really ever stop and think of it that way very often? i think it is so easy to get caught up in work, school, bills, friends, families, and etc and not THINK about everything else. I am continuing in my reading of, "One thing you can´t do in Heaven," by MArk Cahill and that is where i got the thought. It makes you think. And it makes you think that you better spend some time researching where you might go after you pass this life. And do not resort to the thinking that "nobody knows what happens after death..." Our life here is just a little speck on a timeline of eternity. Shew! Pretty fast. Isn´t it worth some research and thought? Think about it.

If you don´t know what you believe or do not believe in anything, Mark Cahill has another book called, "One Heatbeat Away" Your Journey Into Eternity which is thought-provoking and a quick read.

IF you ARE a Christian, i REALLY recommend you read the one i´m reading, "One thing you can´t do in Heaven"!!! Read it read it read it!

Have i mentioned that it rains here EVERY afternoon. Since i have been here, it has rained every afternoon except 2! Usually only for a few hours, more or less. This is typical summer weather. This picture is from the door looking out front door onto the balacony. I think the weather here is great. It is so cool at night (probably around 60) and only a little hot during the day time (80) until it rains.

We had a little get together for the last night of the chicago team. We did these fireworks which are so fun. And yes, Kevin, I did them too! (when a friend of mine, Kevin, came home from Costa Rica over the 4th of July, he showed us how to these in the backyard!). It´s actually a little scary when the sparks start coming down on your head!!! (apparently, i wasn´t spinning it fast enough). I had one land right on top of my head and burn it a little! Oops! No big deal though, felt fine the next day! Ha,ha! Looks awesome, doesn´t it???

Before we headed to our all-nighter at the Romeria, we took the Chicago group to a school to play with kids. I had been to this school the previous week to do the same thing. This little girl Valeria recognized me from the last time and came RUNNING to me! (I couldn´t believe she remembered me - i was with a whole different group of people). She looks all shy here, but this little girl is a handful. She is one of the teacher´s daughters. She had me running ALL over the place. She likes being spun around in cirles and being thrown into the air. She also likes to hold your hand and run everywhere with you. We lost her shoes like 5 times! She is so cute - and precious.

We broke the kids up into about 6 different stations and we rotated them about every 20 minutes. We had jump rope, tug of war with tires, wiffle ball (sp?), dancing, the moonwalk jump thing, Bible stories, etc.

My station was the jump rope, which is the best one, in my opinion. the time passes so quickly and it´s a blast! Plus, i love jumproping! Plus i got to learn how to say jump rope in spanish, along with "get in a line", and "you next, you next!" "one more time" and "try again" and etc. :)

This is Jason and Carolina. They have been here since i´ve been here. They are from College Station, both in college, and have been down here for 6 wks working for Conexion. We do a lot together as we are not part of any of the groups here, we´re just around all the time helping out. Carolina is a HUGE help b/c she is fluent in Spanish. Last Friday, we got most of the say off and Monika took us to another city (can´t remember, ha,ha) and then to downtown San Jose´where we just walked around a lot.

So, a young life group from Chicago has been here all week. One of their last nights here, their leader requested a "home stay," so that the kids could get a little glimpse into Costa Rican life and hopefully get to try some traditional Costa Rican snacks/meals. So, my friend, Bimbo, in this picture here hosted 2 of the highschool guys. He picked me up and i spent the day at his house with him, the two guys, and his family. They offered us "snacks" which consisted of many diff´t containers; including, rice, meat (beef), cooked plantains, pita bread w/ sprinkled cheese, beans, etc...yeah, snack. That could have been our dinner! Then we were offered rice pudding which had huge raisins in it (the size of green grapes!)! It was awesome! Then about 7:30pm, we left to meet my friend Monika and the two girls she was hosting for the evening. I stayed the night at Monika´s. We went to this restraurant...

Chicharronera Acserri

We went to this restraurant called Chicharronera Acserri. They are known for serving chicharron which means pork. I think pork was the only thing on the menu and it was really good! I am not sure i can explained the rest that happened here, it was so weird. Everything was normal...ordered...got our drinks...got our food...almost finished eating...until...these guys started walking out playing instruments and all these people with costumes came out and started dancing all over the place. IT was so loud, it was impossible to have a conversation and so strange to watch. They played probably for 20 min before walking to another area of the restraurant to continue playing. Each constume had a plastice mask over their entire head and when they danced, they jumped up and down and spun in circles. It was soooooo cool.

Thank you all for the prayers on my eye - it continues to get better and better and i am no longer worried. However, I have been getting news that Melina (my dog) is not doing too well. My friend, Lisa, has been watching over her (and she really could not possibly be in better care) and has been doing everything to make her better and even took her to the vet on Wed. who thinks it´s b/c she is sensitive (well...we all know that, if you know my dog) and i am not there and went on to say sometimes dogs will just "go down hill" from the stress. I often leave her for a week or wknd here and there and every summer i leave for about a month and she´s never had problems before. I am telling you, i am worried sick about her - What does "down hill" mean exactly? Please, please pray.

I will catch you up on everything soon...i am sorry for those of you i haven´t been able to get back with and/or keep in touch. Thank you so much for your comments on here and your emails. I have hardly had time to sleep and this past week has been nothing but one challenge/obstacle after another. Fill you in soon.

First time to cook

So my favorite food here is cooked plantains. For those of you who do not know what those are, they look like giant bananas and taste similiar, but maybe a little sweeter. They cook them and eat them soft or they make them into chips (potato chip style). They are awesome. So the stove top here is gas, which i haven´t used a gas stove in 6 years or so. I forgot how quickly the stove top would heat up and i threw those plantains right on that super hot oil which of course splattered everywhere and about burned a hole through my wrist. I am thankful it wasn´t my eye b/c i am still bearing this cooking wound...it looks worse today than when i first burnt it two Saturdays ago! So, the Conexion team likes to laugh at me and tell everyone i don´t know how to cook. But NOW i do!

This is Vanessa, my roommate for the summer. She works full-time for Conexion and AMAZES me in all that she does. She is living with me this summer, mostly b/c it is not safe for me to be alone here (although i would probably be okay). She is gracious and giving, and i can´t tell you how helpful she has been to me. She is always doing everything with Conexion all the time and the girl barely sleeps at all. She is happy and friendly. She does not speak ANY English, so we have continuous interesting conversations and facial expressions. This picture was taken in the morning after no much sleep so...keep that in mind! ;)

Well, i received an email from him last night telling me that he had a job at midnight (he is like some sort of entertainer for all sorts of things like birthday parties and stuff like that...). He said he was going to make fire in his mouth and he was explaining how he does it. I couldn´t help but thinking about "STRANGE FIRE!!!" Ha, ha, ha. Just look at them! So, i recieved a phone call at 6:24 AM Thursday morning...it was Wil and he said, "I talked to Jherson and you are coming to the beach with us (with the Ohio group), be ready in about 25 minutes!" Yikes...that phone call woke me up! Not even 15 min later...Nalene calls (Wil´s wife), "we´ll be there in one minute." Are you kidding me?! I wasn´t even close to being ready (imagine that). I had to pack for a whole day plus get dressed and etc, keeping in mind i just woke up from a deep sleep. Wil and his car full of people is standing out front shouting, "Christie! Come on! Let´s go!" for the next 5 minutes! The neighbors were looking to see what was going on. Wish i was kidding, but i´m not.

However, the flip side is that i got to go to the beach all day! The beach is called Jaco. It´s very close (should be within a mile drive), but with traffic and no direct route, it takes almost 4 hrs to get to. I got to go surfing most of the day and it was a blast! On the way to Jaco, we crossed a bridge that had these lovely crocks underneath. Check out that awesome one who is yawning. Man, those things are HUGE!

Street Preaching!

I have heard that Greg and Wil often go "street preaching", but was not sure how it all worked. Today, we went into downtown San Josè in a popular and very busy shopping area. So, Greg put a few U.S. $1-dollar bills and a $20 in his hand and stood on a crate - before he even said anything, people began crowding around him. Greg asked them funny questions like, "Who can name the only mammal that can´t jump?" Answer: elephant. "What U.S. state produces the most coffee?" Answer: Hawaii. etc. He would give one dollar to those who answered correctly. Then he would hold up the $20 dollar bill and ask, "Who is a good person here, hold up your hand?" He would call on someone and tell him/her to answer some more questions. He would ask them, "Have you ever lied?...stolen?...committed adultry (maybe not physically, but in mentally)?" etc. somewhat following the 10 commandments. Then he would ask, "Does a liar, a thief, or an adulter sound like a ´good´person to you?" The crowd only grew larger and he had their attention. Then Greg shared the gospel (only a few minutes) and mentioned his gringo friends were around to pass out information about their church to them. He stuck around to answer more questions people had and the rest of us talked to the people around us (they wanted to ask us all more questions). Greg told us earlier that preaching is important because it works. God commands in the Bible to preach the gospel and Jesus, Paul, and others preached in the streets (so it´s not something weird, or something that doesn´t work anymore today). Side note - Greg is from the U.S. and speaks very good Spanish, all of his preaching is in Spanish.

Here is a local Costa Rican. On the first day at job site, she showed up, wanting to help. She followed me around for the next couple days until...not really...this is my friend Brooke. We are friends from our church in Houston and she is staying with me for 6 days. She has helped me so much, i don´t know how i would have gotten around the first few days without her help (she speaks a lot of Spanish). I mean...just look at her! She even looks helpful.

Jherson asked the man who is an auto mechanic at this autoshop here if we could pay him to use his shop during the Romeria. Conexion will need a place to sell drinks, give out tracks, speak with people (share the gospel), and play music. The man (hopefully i will learn his name soon) told Jherson he did not need to pay. So, Jherson asked him if there was anything we could do for him and the man said, "no." Jherson noticed that he needed a new roof along with some other things. Here is a before-shot.

Let´s paint! These guys are a part of about 9 from a church in Ohio working with Conexion. I am really enjoying spending time with this group and will be VERY sad to see them leave. I have learned so much from them - they love the Lord so much and have encouraged me in my walk/service to God by sharing what God is doing in their church and their lives. They really are a blessing unto others. Thanks Ohio friends - you guys are so awesome! I do have to tell you one story about the guy on the right though...his name´s Tad...and he told Brooke and I that when it rains in Houston that people in Houston say, "Sure is a toad-choker out there!" I mean...I am still laughing at how funny that is and the fact that i´ve never heard that before. Please if you have ever heard that expression, let me know. LOL. I think our whole van laughed for almost 45 min straight one night. Fun group. Thanks for the laughs guys.

The Frey is in New York for the wknd!!! CBS flew 2 friends of mine whom i used to work to teach with and myself to New York for an interview with 48 hours. They booked us for a wknd stay in a 5 star Taj hotel! The Pierre Taj Hotel on 61st and 5th Ave - just across from Central Park. We could easily walk to Rockefeller Center and Times Square. It was an amazing experience.

This is Rhea and Suzie. We used to teach together. Rhea and i were partner teachers for one year, i taught the math and science and she taught the language arts and social studies. When we arrived at the hotel, we were quickly greeted by Richard Schlesinger, Marcy Spencer (the producer), and Daria Karp (Research and development and coordinator). We went to the Rotunda which is in the hotel where we ordered "light tea" which meant we got a choice of tea (i ordered delicious chocolate mint) and a bunch of mini little sandwhiches (served on a fancy, silver, 3-shelf tower, of course). Quite fancy and the architecture and structure of the room was something to marvel. It had high ceilings and the walls were painted w/ murals. Reminded me of something you would see in Europe. The 48 hrs people were awesome to hang out with and talk to. They told of us some of the other stories they are working on- they had so many interesting stories to share. They were completely friendly and generous with their time. Now we are ready to see New York!

So we continued walking down 5th Ave. We went into Henri Bendel b/c we heard people in there created lipsticks for you. Giella cosmetics. Sure enough! It was true. I told Albee what colors i liked to wear and along w/ some of his expertise, he created what i like to call "Indiana Girl." That's what i named my lipstick! They keep your recipe there so you can call and order more during the year- you can even ask them to make it more opaque (like for the fall and winter months) or more sheer. So funny. But like a dream come true for someone who absolutely HATES to shop, especially for a new lipstick!

AFter dinner we took a long walk. We stopped first at the library, then walked to Times Square. I think this is the library the Ghostbusters went into in the movie. Probably in a lot of other movies too. It is a beautiful building.

The library is "guarded" by these two lions...one is called Prudence, and i can't remember the name of the other.

So, this was the wknd Paris Hilton was being sent back to jail. We saw this very life-like Paris Hilton in a jail suit in this store on Times Square. There were news clips of Paris Hilton playing over and over on video screens just outside the window we were looking in.

M&M world. What a cute little M&M on the big screen. It showed M&M video clips the whole night.

So, I have never heard of the "turn down" service in a hotel before. I stopped dead in my tracks when i came in for the evening because i could tell things were changed around in my room. Then i realized it was intentional. Right away i nocticed my lights had been dimmed, durtains drawn, the radio playing classical music, and the corner of my bed was turned down. On my pillow was a rose pedal along w/ tomorrow's forecast. It couldn't keep from giggling while i thought about room service for breakfast! wow.
